Joint Seminar of HIPO and EUIPO began in Budapest

On 6 March 2025 a seminar jointly organized by the Hungarian Intellectual Property Office (HIPO) and the Boards of Appeal of the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO BoA) began in Budapest. The event provides a unique forum for dialogue and cooperation for IP judges, representatives of IP offices and professionals from the countries of the enlarged Visegrad Group.

The event was opened by Mr Szabolcs Farkas, President of the HIPO, and Mr Sven Stürmann, President of the EUIPO BoA.

The seminar has been attended by nearly 100 participants onsite and by nearly 400 participants online.

Today's program included, among others, the following topics:

  • Highlight of the revamped EU Design Regulation and Boards of Appeal design case law
  • Highlight of the Design Directive for National IPOs
  • Intersection of trademarks and copyright
  • Proof of reputation in Hungarian national trade mark proceedings
  • Challenges of trade mark genuine use
  • Recent case law on acquired distinctiveness

The program of the event will continue on the morning of March 7 with the topic on the determination of the likelihood of confusion between short trademarks.
