World Intellectual Property Day of the UN

In 2000, at its General Assembly, the World Intellectual Property Organization of the UN, seated in Geneva, declared 26th April to be the world day of the protection of the works and results of the artists and inventors who substantially contribute to the world's social development and progress. The idea of the world day was conceived in order to pay tribute to human knowledge and imagination, that is, creativity.

Message from WIPO Director General Francis Gurry: http://www.wipo.int/ip-outreach/en/ipday/2013/dg_message.html

Ever since, like the world's other industrial property and copyright institutions, the Hungarian Intellectual Property Office has attained, with diverse programmes, events, actions and initiatives, the objective undertaken together: to shed light on creativity, raise awareness of intellectual property protection and give social recognition to it. The aim set at the beginning was to link "ars and techné" by honouring the institutions outstanding in nurturing, sharing and preserving the heritage of Hungarian art and technical culture by the Millennium Prize also founded in 2000.

At the Budapest celebration of the world IP day, taking place on Friday, 26th April in the recently opened Budapest Music Center the Millennium Prizes of 2013 will be awarded. The prize was founded by the president of the Hungarian Intellectual Property Office - then called the Hungarian Patent Office - in the year of the Hungarian Millennium to recognize the institutions playing an important part in intellectual property protection. The event will be addressed by László Gőz, the founding director of the Budapest Music Center andMiklós Bendzsel, the president of the Hungarian Intellectual Property Office.

The award winners of the Millennium Prize in 2013:

Bartók Archives (The Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Institute for Musicology)

The role of the institution is to administrate Béla Bartók's compositional and scholar estate, to function as a research institute and to organize the international studies on Bartók. The Archives are based on the composer's manuscripts and library left in Hungary. They also contain the second largest collection of compositional autographs, a significant collection of documents belonging to Bartók's folk-music studies as well as part of the composer's personal library, correspondence, and personal collections. The workshop, owning the largest unified collection in the world, administrates with commitment the Documenta Bartokiana series, the volumes of Bartók's instructive editions, as well as the immense undertaking of the complete critical edition.

Environmental Optics Laboratory (Eötvös University)

The laboratory specialized in biophysical research is a perfect example of international level research transcending areas of sciences as well as borders and of the exploitation of synergistic effects. Under its guidance physicists, biologists and meteorologists work together on the resolution of common research and development missions and on the creation of an increasing number of inventions such as the method and instrument for the calculation of the height of cloud-ceiling. The pattern, object and method created to reduce polarized light pollution might also be a wide-range innovation.

Open Air Museum - Skanzen of Szentendre

The institution was created with the aim to present folk architecture, interior decoration, farming and way of life in the Hungarian language area from the middle of the 18th century to the 1st half of the 20th century through original and relocated buildings, authentic objects, in the framework of old settlement patters. The initially planned nine geographical regions are being completed with an area presenting the way of life of the Hungarians living outside the borders, the presentation of the Hungarian rural architecture in the 10th-15th centuries, as well as with a unit illustrating the buildings and ways of life of a village of the 20th century. The functions of preserving, maintaining and exhibiting cultural values are paired with outstanding researching, publishing and cultural preservation work, unifying in a inspiring manner the built and spiritual heritage.

The editorial office of World of Nature (TIT Természet Világa - Természettudományi Közlöny)

One of the world oldest periodical, which was founded in 1869 for the fostering of scientific culture. The journal informs the readers on the latest achievements of science and technology in an easily understandable way and presents the scientific man. The editorial bestows particular care to draw the attention of the interested young people to the technological and natural sciences and incites them through competitions to achieve smaller or greater creative work. The World of Nature has been publishing since 1991 a 16-page student journal, which is drafted by talented secondary school students. This is unique in Europe. This differs from any other talent competitions in that here the students give account of their knowledge in an intelligible way, in a pure Hungarian style.
