The Jedlik Ányos Award was established by the Minister of Industry and Trade on the initiative of the President of the Hungarian Patent Office in 1996, in the centennial year of the Hungarian system of patents, in order to recognize outstandingly successful inventors' work and the scientific achievement of excellent standards and efficiency in protection of industrial property. The number of awardees is five annually and an honoris causa award is also awarded occasionally. Consideration takes place on the basis of nominations from official and external professional organisations.
The delivery is coincided with the national 15 March holiday.
